Clearing the air is a good, well-researched book, giving an in-depth overview of different causes and consequences, sources and solutions of air pollution. The author visits a number of global cities (London, Los Angeles, Delhi, Beijing, and Paris) and describes how they tackled their infamous air situation. A very interesting historical chapter goes deep into history, starting with the discovery and mastery of fire, over Roman-times lead pollution, and helps putting things into perspective. There is also the most detailed overview of the VW/diesel scandal I have come across, among many more sub-topics.Yet, the book suffers from two major flaws. Since one of the solutions to tackle air pollution is to electrify more or less everything, there is an obvious focus on renewable energy, as well as on greening urban landscapes, as opposed to burning coal and diesel. Yet, as the author admits, renewables include biofuel, which are clearly not providing clean air.But no mention of nuclear energy. Nuclear energy can provide massive amounts of clean energy, and thus clean air, on very small surfaces. Wind or solar energy require vastly bigger areas to generate the same amount of energy, areas that can no longer be used for nature and green space. It’s only a secondary topic of the book, but considering the attention given to wind and solar, the absence of discussing nuclear is glaring. Waste treatment, where landfills and ovens are two of the most common solutions with harmful side effects on air pollution, could have been described, too.Secondly, while being very well written, a good editor would have been helpful still. The personal story or anecdotal discovery during his research is very welcome in lightening up the book, but the author has gone completely overboard in this respect. At times, the book is more of a personal journey, accompanied by his Egg air quality sensor. Many interviews are transcribed almost verbatim, so that readability ultimately depends on the interlocutor and not the author. Some parts are just too detailed, thereby losing structure. This is a pity.Recommended reading, but could have been better.
